The Investor's Edge

Stocks closed a record-setting week on a firm note. The measured S&P 500 rose 0.60% on Friday to 7,811.54, the measured Dow rose 0.83% to 51,654.95 and the measured Nasdaq Composite rose 0.63% to 27,366.17, The Business Journal reported, citing the AP, with the S&P 500 just short of the record it set earlier in the week. Leadership rotated: the measured financial sector gained 1.34% while the measured semiconductor sector slipped 0.83%.

Rates and oil stay the swing factors. The ten-year yield rose to 5.24% Friday from 5.22%, per the same report, and it sits near its highest since 2002. Brent settled at $104.72, after swinging between $102.50 and $105. Bond markets are closed today for Columbus Day, so Treasury yields will not print until Tuesday.

The test comes midweek. The big banks report Tuesday, and September consumer prices arrive Wednesday, October 14, with CMC Markets' preview expecting headline inflation of 3.6% against the measured August rate of 3.4%. Retail sales and producer prices follow Thursday, and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh speaks Friday at the IMF meetings.

This edition went to press before the American open on Monday. Primary figures are measured from our own store and each item is date-stamped. Index closes carry Friday's 9 October session; the Treasury curve, credit spreads and the VIX carry 8 October, and oil carries 6 October, because those series lag a session or more. Gold and silver carry a 12 October mark and bitcoin an 11 October mark. Where a measured mark and a reported level differ, the measured figure is the one this brief stands behind.
